6th April 2020

Dear friends

You will have likely seen on the news in previous weeks that the Archbishops issued an instruction that all public worship was to be suspended until further notice. Before the lockdown was announced Fr Iain kept the church open for private prayer following official guidance from the Archbishops. Subsequently the Archbishops updated their instruction a day before the lockdown was announced and directed all church buildings to close their doors to the public with immediate effect. The Church was then immediately closed to the public and Fr Iain continued to pray Sunday Mass in the church alone with the doors locked adhering to all Goverment guidelines. Today further, more stringent, direction has been issued by the Diocese which prohibits clergy from privately celebrating Mass within a church building, even where the celebrant is alone and is doing so behind a locked door.

This means for us that the Ascension Church will  remain closed for the foreseeable future, as has been already been the case for a number of weeks.

However the Diocese has confirmed that it is permisable for clergy to privately celebrate the Mass from within their own homes. With this in mind Fr Iain has set up a temporary Altar in the Clergy House and will continue to say Mass privately on Sundays and Solemnities, to offer prayers for you all, especially for the sick, and to commemorate the Year’s Minds of the week.

If you would like to talk, or have any needs that Fr Iain can help with, please email or phone Fr Iain using the details above.

We will continue to publish the weekly address from Father Iain along with the Gospel and Readings (further below on this page) each Sunday by 11am and we published the Holy Week readings yesterday which we hope you also find useful. We have also made available resources from The Church Union and The Society to support your private prayer from home.

These are testing times for all of us, but with God’s help and mutual concern we
will move on in due course to happier days.

With constant prayers and love,
The Ascension Lavender Hill
